Tourists’ Spotlight: Macau’s Most Beautiful Churches

Macau is more than just a gambling capital. It is also home to interesting and iconic places that are worth exploring. Catholic churches, for instance, abound in this tiny yet very lively and vibrant island. Here are some of the most picturesque and interesting churches you must check out on your next visit to Macau.

Our Lady of Penha Chapel

Portuguese sailors built the chapel of Our Lady of Penha in 1622. Since then, the structure has been rebuilt several times and now it stands as one of the most beautiful in the island. The chapel’s surroundings are adorned with trees and flowered paths. It is a famous spot for wedding photos and shooting for movies and TV shows. What’s more, it offers great views as it stands proud on a hill.

St. Dominic’s Church

The construction of St. Dominic’s Church was led by three Spanish Dominican priests in 1587. Located at the center of Macau’s city square, the church is listed as a world heritage site. Its bell tower is currently used as a museum known as the Museum of Sacred Art, which is home to over 300 artifacts. Its traditional clean façade is just truly picturesque. Don’t forget to bring your camera with you.

Guia Chapel

Small but beautiful, the Guia Chapel is a favorite among tourists. It is part of the popular Guia Fortress and right next to it is an old yet charming lighthouse. This 1637 chapel is known for being the home of the image of the Virgin and an antique painting of St. John the Baptist. Another fantastic feature is the murals that showcase both Chinese and western themes. It also offers unparalleled views of the city.

These are only three of the many beautiful churches and chapels you can find in the island of Macau. Catholic or not, you are free to bask in the beauty of these spots.
